Goal | The goal of this proposal is to create a calming space within a high school special education transition classroom to support students who sometimes experience overstimulation or heightened emotional states. This dedicated area will provide a safe and comforting environment where students can self-regulate, refocus, and return to a state of readiness for learning. |
Description | To achieve this, the space will be equipped with a bean bag chair for comfortable seating, school-approved books that encourage reading for relaxation, and various classroom fidgets to help manage anxiety and maintain focus. Additionally, a social skills lessons teaching toolkit will be included to reinforce essential social-emotional skills in a calming setting. Chair bands for fidgety feet will allow students to release energy through movement without disrupting the class while working, while red light green light push lights will provide simple visual cues to signal when it's time to rest or return to activities. To ensure the space remains organized and clutter-free, a file organizer system will be implemented to manage classroom resources effectively. |
Benefits | The benefits of this calming space extend beyond emotional regulation; it will increase student focus and productivity, particularly for those with sensory processing issues, anxiety, or ADHD. By fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment, the calming space will contribute to improved academic outcomes and better classroom management. Overall, this investment in a calming space is a crucial step toward enhancing the learning experience for all students, particularly those in special education. |
