As cited by Enterprise Florida, our increasingly knowledge-based economy is driven by innovation – the foundation of which lies in a dynamic and well-educated workforce equipped with strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills.
The Education Foundation of Martin County has expanded STEM to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) because the arts promote creative thinking, analysis, and problem solving which are critical components of innovation.
Through its work with STEMflorida and the Florida Strategic STEM Task Force, the Education Foundation of Martin County's STEAM Committee has adopted the following strategic goals.
Education Foundation of Martin County
STEAM Initiative Goals
1. Increase the percentage of students successful at each level (K-12, including career and technical) to ensure our student population is:
-
Capable of conducting real-world STEAM projects and inquiry;
-
Capable of authentic and collaborative problem solving;
-
Proficient in applying multidisciplinary knowledge and skills through STEAM;
-
Proficient in English and other languages in order to succeed on a global scale; and
-
Knowledgeable about and interested in STEAM careers
2. Increase the quality and quantity of STEAM educators
3. Create a district-wide sustainable STEAM leadership committee to align existing and emerging STEAM initiatives and represent Martin County as one voice in meeting STEAM demands
The Education Foundation of Martin County continues to work with many local business, community, and educational organizations to promote the above goals and to strengthen the pipeline for our future workforce.
