Goal | Project Goals and Impact: • Increase Speech Production: engaging, hands-on materials will encourage targeted speech sounds in a low-pressure, play-based setting. • Enhance Language Development: The bins will promote vocabulary growth, sentence building, and social communication. • Support Multi-Sensory Learning: Sensory input (textures, movement, sounds, smells and visuals) will help students with diverse learning needs to engage more effectively. • Encourage Prosocial Skills: Small-group activities using the bins will foster appropriate turn-taking, requesting and responding, conversation and cooperative play. |
Description | Many of the young learners I serve are in a self-contained ESE pre-k program, ages 3-5, with varying abilities, including speech and language impairments. Many of our students struggle with articulation and expressive language. These break downs in communication often result in high levels of frustration when students’ needs and wants cannot be expressed clearly and understood by the staff and peers who work and play alongside them. Hands-on, engaging activities that involve sensorimotor play are essential in helping them develop critical communication skills. To support these students, I am seeking funding to create sensory bins designed to target articulation of specific sounds. These bins will include a variety of tactile objects, themed mini-figures, and manipulatives that encourage speech production in a fun and motivating way. Each bin will focus on a different sound (e.g., /p/, /b/, /th/, /v/, /s/, etc.) and include corresponding items that prompt children to practice these sounds in meaningful contexts. |
Benefits | Carryover of skills taught in therapy (I would make bins for the teachers to use as well as in my sessions); additional practice; faster mastery of speech sounds; high interest activity makes practice more likely. By funding this project, you will be directly supporting students who face communication challenges, giving them the tools they need to build strong foundational speech and language skills. These sensory bins will not only be used during speech therapy sessions, but also in daily classroom routines, ensuring ongoing opportunities for essential speech practice. Thank you for considering this request. Your support will make a meaningful impact in the lives of our young learners! Added benefit: vocabulary stimulation. |
